Introducing WooCorps summer jobs program

JOHN HOPKINS March 24th, 2009

The College of Wooster employs students on campus each summer, but this year, to help those who may be experiencing difficulty lining up a summer job back home, the number and value of those jobs is being expanded, through an initiative called WooCorps. The program will encourage students not only to be engaged in their jobs, but also to take advantage of life on campus in the summer months.

What’s in it for me?

During the past several years, students working for the College in the summer have earned $9 per hour, but have been billed for campus housing and been responsible for all their meals. WooCorps jobs will have a minimum wage of $7.30 per hour, free housing, and free breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. In addition, returning students who remain in good academic standing will receive a $500 scholarship for each of the next two semesters, for a total of $1,000.

What are the tax implications?

The housing, meal plan, and grant are all taxable. Specific situations will obviously vary for individual students, but for those who file tax  returns, portions of this may be refundable.

Program details?

The WooCorps program runs 13 weeks, from May 10 to August 8, and students must work 11 of those 13 weeks to be eligible for the scholarship. (Thus, students can take two weeks off, with their supervisor’s permission, during the summer.) The typical work week will be 37.5 hours, and positions will be available in a wide variety of departments, including the grounds crew, hospitality services, the library, and maintenance.
