New summer student job opportunities

JOHN HOPKINS March 7th, 2009

The College is working to increase the number of summer campus jobs for students who are experiencing difficulting lining up other employment, through an initiative called WooCorp. Details of the plan, announced in an e-mail to all underclass students on Friday, are still being worked out, but will include both outdoor and office jobs in a variety of departments.

The College will provide affordable, on-campus meals and free housing in addition to hourly wages. Also part of the package: a substantial scholarship that will be credited to the 2009-10 account of those students who complete the summer work commitment.  Students are encouraged to contact either the Student Employment Office or their intended supervisor if they already have made a commitment to work on campus this summer.

Students will receive e-mails with more details on the program as they become available.

I am a 1985 graduate of Wooster and this is a great idea.

I grew up in southwestern Pa at a time when all of the steel mills and coal mines were shutting down. I was unable to find a summer job due to the poor economy and Dr. Ted Williams and others were able to find me a summer job in Wooster. I am forever grateful to Dr. WIlliams for his kindness and forever support ofWOoster students. This is a great program responding to the needs of the college community.

I think of Wooster as being a community of many people responding to the needs of the community and individuals.

    Great idea.

    I graduated in 1990.

For two summers - 1988 and 1989 - I worked full time in The Office of the Registrar. Working these two summers helped me partly finance my Wooster education. The housing tab for the entire summer during each of the two years was picked up by the college.

Rather than looking for work elsewhere in these trying times, they would be better off working on campus. The new initiative of subsidizing meals will definitely benefit students and help reduce their overall burden of the Wooster education.

I compliment the administration for looking at different ways of helping students stay in school during these hard times.
